06/03/2010 - Hempstead, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Former Hofstra University football coach Joe Gardi died Wednesday following a stroke suffered last week. He was 71 years old.
Gardi compiled a 119-62-2 record in 16 seasons at Hofstra from 1990 to 2005. Both his win total and .650 winning percentage rank second in program history. Under Gardi's guidance, the Pride made the jump from NCAA Division III in 1990 to I-AA (now FCS) in 1994. They earned five playoff appearances during Gardi's final 10 seasons.
A native of Harrison, N.J., Gardi was a high school all-state selection before attending the University of Maryland from 1956 to 1960. He was the Terrapins' co-captain and Unsung Hero Award winner as an offensive tackle and linebacker in 1959. After leaving Maryland, Gardi signed a contract with the Washington Redskins, playing in two preseason games in 1960, and he also had a tryout with the Buffalo Bills in 1961.
A number of Gardi's former players at Hofstra have gone on to play professionally, including former New York Jets wide receiver Wayne Chrebet and current New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston. Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris was an assistant coach under Gardi.
Gardi is survived by his wife, Audrey; two grown children, Joanne and David; daughter-in-law Michele; and four grandchildren.
