White leads U.S. Junior Amateur by three

07/24/2007 - Augusta, MO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - James White shot a five-under 66 Monday to take a three-shot lead after the first round of stroke play at the U.S. Junior Amateur.

Mu Hu, Cameron Peck and Seung Yul Noh were tied for second place at two-under 69, with Hunter Hamrick and John Popeck another shot further back at Boone Valley Golf Club.

White, 17, closed his front nine with four consecutive birdies, then made back-to-back bogeys to begin the back nine. But he got both of those shots back with an eagle at the par-five 14th.

He added another birdie at the 16th and finished his round with only two fairways missed, making the tough 6,800-yard course look easier than it is.

"If there's a bogey-free round out there, I want to hear about it," said White, an Atlanta native who will play golf at Georgia Tech. "Even if you have a good round going, you are going to make bogeys.

"If you hit the rough out here, there's not much you can do. You can catch fliers or go nowhere. You can hit it crooked. The thing I did well was hit the fairways."

The field will be trimmed to the low 64 scores following the second round of stroke play on Tuesday. Match play begins Wednesday and ends with the 36-hole final on Saturday.
