World Cup 2010 Preview: Can Ronaldo regain form for Portugal?

Cristiano Ronaldo is widely considered to be one of the world's top players, and with the retirement of Portuguese great Figo, he is now the face of the national team.

Ronaldo has performed brilliantly on the club level during his young career, including being named the 2008 FIFA World Player of the Year, but his form for Portugal has fallen short of expectations recently.

Portugal struggled badly in qualification with just one win in its first five games before finishing with four wins and a draw to earn second place in their group.

They needed to get past Bosnia-Herzegovina in a two-legged playoff just to reach the World Cup, but it was a much tougher than expected road considering the talent on the Portugal roster.

The performances in qualification were less than convincing, but Ronaldo's in particular stood out as he failed to score in seven games and didn't provide the type of creativity needed for Portugal to seriously contend for the World Cup.

Manager Carlos Queiroz has a number of strong defensive options, with players like Bruno Alves, Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira and Pepe, while a talented midfield includes Deco, Simao, Nani and Miguel Veloso among others.

But the big question regarding this team is where the goals will come from if Ronaldo is not in top form.

Portugal is pretty thin up top outside of the Real Madrid man, with Hugo Almeida and Liedson as the other options.

Making things even more difficult was the draw for the group stage, which saw Portugal drawn into one of the toughest groups in the competition along with Brazil, the Ivory Coast and North Korea.

Brazil will be obvious favorites, with a fierce battle between Portugal and the Ivory Coast likely determining the second team to advance.

Those two teams will face each other in the opening match in Group G, meaning that Ronaldo had better find his form quickly.
