Jackson makes White Sox debut at Comerica

Baseball Betting Lines

08/04/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Chicago White Sox general manager Kenny Williams acquired starting pitcher Edwin Jackson from Arizona last week in an effort to shore up the rotation for a run at an American League Central title.

Williams will get a chance to see if that move was a wise one when Jackson takes the mound tonight in the third installment of a four-game series against the division-rival Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. Jackson was just 6-10 with a 5.16 earned run average in 21 starts this season for the D'Backs, and threw the second no-hitter in team history on June 25 against Tampa Bay.

After a 14-win season for the Rays as part of their American League pennant season in 2008, Jackson was shipped to Detroit and had his best year in 2009. He was 13-9 with a 3.62 ERA in 33 starts for the Tigers and earned his first All-Star nod. Jackson, who has lost his last four starts, defeated Detroit back on June 19 this season in a 6-5 decision. He gave up four runs, three of which were earned, and nine hits in 7 2/3 innings, and is 2-0 with a 3.42 ERA in five career meetings (3 starts) with the Tigers.

The White Sox could use another win over Detroit after splitting a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday. It is seven games in front of the Tigers in the AL Central standings, while Minnesota is lurking 1 1/2 games off the pace. Chicago won the first contest, 12-2, thanks to a 15-hit attack and solo home runs by Juan Pierre, Alex Rios and Dayan Viciedo.

Pierre, Rios and Gordon Beckham each had two RBI, while Alexei Ramirez collected four hits, three runs scored and drove in two runs for the White Sox, who and got 7 2/3 decent innings from winning pitcher Mark Buehrle. Buehrle gave up two runs and seven hits to help the Pale Hose pad their lead over the Tigers.

"Even if we swept these guys, I wouldn't think it's a knockout," Buehrle said of the Tigers and the division race. "We were down 10, 11 games and came back, so until they're officially out of it, I wouldn't count them out."

In the nightcap, Chicago's bats were silent in a 7-1 decision and Paul Konerko's solo home run in the seventh inning provided the scoring. Omar Vizquel posted three hits and Carlos Torres was dealt the loss for permitting five runs on nine hits and five walks in six innings.

The White Sox are 7-2 over their last nine games.

Meanwhile, Detroit got a rough start from Rick Porcello in the first game, as the hard-throwing youngster was drilled for seven runs and eight hits through 4 1/3 innings of work. Enrique Gonzalez fared no better in relief, allowing four runs over 2 2/3 frames.

Austin Jackson had three hits and an RBI in the 10-run setback. Detroit then rebounded with a win in the evening aided by a strong start by Jeremy Bonderman, who held the White Sox to a run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings.

"You just got to play one game at a time," Bonderman said. "Any time you face the guys that are leading the division, it's nice to win some games and help yourself instead of looking for other help. You still got to win your game, but you're always looking for another team to pick you up, and it's nice to be able to do it yourself."

Johnny Damon helped his starter by registering three hits and two RBI. Brennan Boesch also plated a pair of runs for the Tigers, who won for only the second time in their last nine contests.

Tigers right-hander Armando Galarraga hasn't won since June 24 against the New York Mets and will try to put the brakes on his lengthy winless streak tonight. Galarraga is 0-2 with a 5.16 earned run average over his previous five starts and last toed the rubber in Friday's 6-5 win at Boston. He did not figure into the decision and held the Red Sox to a run in 4 2/3 innings.

Galarraga is 3-3 in 13 games (12 starts) this season and will face Chicago for the second time in 2010. He did not factor in the outcome of a 7-2 win back on June 8, as he tossed five innings of two-run ball. Galarraga is 1-2 with a 4.78 ERA in six career games, four of which have been starts, against the White Sox.

Chicago has won four of six meetings with Detroit this season after splitting 18 matchups a year ago. The White Sox have won nine of the previous 12 contests in this series.

Super Bowl XLIII Betting - Super Bowl 2009

Super Bowl 2009, the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Let’s take a look at the Super Bowl 2009 betting odds and the betting line and figure out where they’ve been and where they are going to go.

MySportsbook.com put up the Super Bowl 2009 betting odds late on Sunday night with the Pittsburgh Steelers favored by 6.5 points and a total betting line at 47.5 points.

Since then, however, the Super Bowl 2009 betting odds have seen a good deal of movement and you’ll want to be on top of where they are likely to move to make sure you get the best line value for the big game.

Since opening, the Super Bowl 2009 betting lines went to Steelers -7 in the span of roughly 3 hours but were quickly bought back down just minutes later to 6.5 again.

After that is took about 5-6 more hours before the betting line went back to -7 where it has sat for a while now and is likely to remain. The opening betting total of 47.5 was bet down right after the line became available and went to 47 within minutes.

Roughly a day later it has been bet even further down to the 46.5 tally it currently is set at.

Roughly 60% of gamblers seem to be on the Cardinals here so the point spread will be bet down and a 7.5 would not last very long at all with many taking the early 6.5 in hopes of finding a potential middle in the Super Bowl 2009 betting odds.

If you like Arizona and see a 7.5, I’d take it as soon as possible because it’s unlikely to last. For Pittsburgh backers, the -7 might be the best you’ll be able to find but a 6.5 is definitely possible close to game time.

Regarding the Super Bowl 2009 betting odds for the total, most tracked gamblers are already on the over and with those who took the under 47.5 already securing a middle on the over 46.5, the only way I see it moving is back up to 47 so if you like the over, I’d recommend betting now.

2007 NFL Football Betting Preview

“You play to win the game!”

Those are the words of notoriously intense head coach Herman Edwards. Unfortunately, from a bettors’ perspective, most coaches don’t feel that way about the NFL preseason. August is a time to evaluate young players, finalize the depth chart and pray your star players stay healthy.

The trick to making money during the exhibition schedule is identifying coaches – like Edwards – who can’t stand losing even when there's nothing on the line.

The New York Jets betting won 15 of 21 preseason games and went 14-7 against the spread (ATS) during Edwards’s five-year tenure with the club. In his first season as the Kansas City Chiefs field boss, the team improved from 0-4 to 2-2.

Identifying win-a-holics like Edwards is a good start if you plan betting the preseason – even though most say you shouldn’t ... but what the hell do they know anyway?

Here’s a brief rundown of two teams that have a habit of winning during the second-stringers’ season, and another club that has a good chance of exceeding this year.

New York Giants betting lines

Playing in the media hub of North America can be stressful but the press can’t write anything negative about the way Tom Coughlin’s boys play in the preseason. The Giants won and covered all four games last summer, improving their record to 7-1 both straight up (SU) and against the spread over the last two years.

Coughlin has shown he’s not afraid to give his starters more time in the second preseason game than most of his colleagues, no doubt one of the reasons his team has been so dominant.

Dallas Cowboys betting lines

Bettors can count on America’s team early on. The Cowboys are 14-6 both SU and ATS since 2002 in warm-up contests. Former coach Bill Parcells, the coach of the team the last four years, has an intimidating, in-your-face presence – surely a reason Dallas has had so much early success.

The Big Tuna won’t be strolling the sidelines with looks of disgust, but new coach Wade Phillips will be anxious to make a good first impression for owner Jerry Jones.

Dallas plays the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos before things get serious. They then face the Houston Texans in their third contest (the game starters see most game time) and finish off with the Minnesota Vikings.

Expect a Dallas team able to walk away with another 3-1 preseason record.

Oakland Raiders betting lines

This team scored a league-worst 12 offensive touchdowns last season, so the rookies and veterans each have something to prove. There’s a bounty of first-unit jobs up for grabs and plenty of bodies competing for those slots.

First-time head coach Lane Kiffin will be eager to impress an owner who employs the philosophy, “Just win, baby!”

The 32-year-old Kiffin has to command respect from a locker room full of players older than him. All of these factors should lead to purpose in preseason.

Don’t forget: before playing like a team that belonged in NFL Europe, Oakland went 4-1 (both SU and ATS) in exhibition games.
